Why Shababik?
At Shababik («windows» in Arabic), we open a window onto a world unknown to many, and all too often misrepresented. Defying misbeliefs and clichés, we aim to show you the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa) in all its beauty — through its intricate crafts, its enchanting flavours and its powerful voices. You will find all sorts of beautiful objects, such as ceramics or brassware, foods and spices, wines and liquor (Yes, alcohol is consumed in the Middle East), but also books and magazines.
Every item is selected according to the highest standards of quality — every object is handmade, foodstuff are grown and produced sustainably, books and magazines stand out not only by their content but also their aesthetic and design. We know our suppliers and pay them the price they ask for. And — striving for maximum transparency — we share with you the story behind the product. Who made it, how and where? For now, you can shop with us online and at our pop-ups on the Côte d'Azur.
In the future, however, Shababik will be more than just a shop. Facing widespread misconceptions and growing Islamo- and Arabophobia, we see it as our mission and duty to give contemporary Middle Eastern voices a platform in Europe. As we move into our permanent home in late 2024, we will begin to host events such as concerts, readings or discussions — embracing the beauty of lived culture and challenging public opinion. Shababik will be a space of encounter, exchange and education, mutual respect, and least but not least — fun.
Ahlan wa sahlan!
