Why Shababik?

At Shababik («windows» in Arabic), we open a window onto a world unknown to many, and all too often misrepresented. Defying misbeliefs and clichés, we aim to show you the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa) in all its beauty — through its intricate crafts, its enchanting flavours and its powerful voices. You will find all sorts of beautiful objects, such as ceramics or brassware, foods and spices, wines and liquor (Yes, alcohol is consumed in the Middle East), but also books and magazines.

Every item is selected according to the highest standards of quality — every object is handmade, foodstuff are grown and produced sustainably, books and magazines stand out not only by their content but also their aesthetic and design. We know our suppliers and pay them the price they ask for. And — striving for maximum transparency — we share with you the story behind the product. Who made it, how and where? For now, you can shop with us online and at our pop-ups on the Côte d'Azur.

In the future, however, Shababik will be more than just a shop. Facing widespread misconceptions and growing Islamo- and Arabophobia, we see it as our mission and duty to give contemporary Middle Eastern voices a platform in Europe. As we move into our permanent home in late 2024, we will begin to host events such as concerts, readings or discussions — embracing the beauty of lived culture and challenging public opinion. Shababik will be a space of encounter, exchange and education, mutual respect, and least but not least — fun.

Ahlan wa sahlan!
Welcome!

Shababik's values

Shababik was born from the genuine intention to "make a difference". There are many businesses out there selling pretty things, completely disregarding any viable ethical foundation. At Shababik, we abide by the following core values unconditionally and unequivocally:

  • Fair business

Much financial independence and knowledge have been lost in recent decades, as artisans — who can hardly compete with the prices of mass-produced imported goods — have had to place themselves on the job market. At Shababik, we work with those who are holding on to their craft and thereby help it stay alive. Our exchanges with our producers are fair and respectful and we pay them the price they ask for. Our business relations are based on long-lasting, reliable partnerships and collaborations, rather than on one-shot transactions.

  • Transparent origin

At Shababik, we know our suppliers personally and can proudly say that everything is made locally in the MENA region, with local materials and ingredients wherever possible. This provides livelihood for the producers and their families and a better, longer-lasting product for you.

  • Highest quality

Everything you can find at Shababik is artisanally-made by skilled hands using fine raw materials and ancient techniques that have been handed down from generation to generation. The result is a quality the likes of which industrial mass production cannot match. A difference you can see, feel, and sometimes — taste.

  • Local knowledge

Shababik is a love story that began in Lebanon long before its inception as a business. The "Middle East" is no exotic place to us, but a home which we cherish and go back to as often as we can. Our wish is to connect you with the rich cultural heritage of these countries and regions, to awaken your curiosity and interest, and perhaps one day make you want to get on a plane bound for Beirut or Cairo and embrace the beautiful culture by yourself.
