“Al-Shaam” has always carried two meanings — the Levant in history, and Damascus in our daily speech. A city as old as time, yet alive in every stone, every street corner and every memory. I left Damascus ten years ago. I left a city that was weary, burdened, and tired — but even in its exhaustion, it remained colorful, diverse, vibrant, and full of charm. Today, Damascus only longs for peace, so it can breathe again, so it can return to its colors, its beauty, and its light. This piece is both a tribute and a prayer: Salaam ʿala al-Shaam — peace be upon Damascus (سَلامٌ على الشام). — Alaʾa Burjas
